Bogie springs play a critical role in the safe and stable operation of rail vehicles by absorbing shocks and maintaining vehicle balance. Over time, however, these springs can degrade or drift outside their original tolerance range due to wear, environmental conditions, and repeated load cycles. This poses a safety risk, potentially affecting ride quality and leading to mechanical failure.
A major player in the rail industry who operators worldwide approached the team at the Institute of Spring Technology (IST) to perform comprehensive load testing and calibration services on both its new and operational springs. The goal was to validate that springs in use were still functioning within their design specifications and safety parameters, and to recalibrate where necessary.
Our team at IST visited the client, to fully understand the testing requirements. We then mobilised our in-house spring load testing equipment capable of simulating operational forces and accurately measuring spring deflection and stiffness. Each spring was tested against the original design specifications, and tolerances were assessed to determine continued usability.
We worked closely with both spring manufacturers and maintenance depots to minimise disruption and ensure fast turnaround times.
96% of tested springs were confirmed to operate within safety tolerances
Early identification of fatigue in 4% of springs, which were proactively replaced
Reduced unplanned downtime by supporting predictive maintenance
Enhanced safety assurance for passengers and freight
“Having a trusted partner for spring testing and calibration has given us greater confidence in the reliability of our bogies. The detailed reporting and expertise provided has been invaluable for our maintenance schedules.”
