At Rail Live 2026, IST made an impressive debut, engaging directly with the UK rail sector to highlight its expertise in spring testing, failure analysis, and engineering support, reinforcing its role in improving reliability and safety across rail applications. A key highlight of this issue is the continued progress across our software portfolio, particularly within Spring Calculator Professional. We are pleased to showcase the advancements introduced in the April 2026 release, which include enhanced analytical capabilities, a more intuitive and streamlined user experience, and expanded design functionality. These improvements not only increase efficiency and accuracy but also represent a significant step forward in equipping engineers with powerful, reliable tools to support high-performance design in increasingly demanding applications.
This edition also places a strong emphasis on advanced failure analysis techniques, with a focus on the use of SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) to investigate spring failures. By uncovering detailed material and fracture characteristics, these methods provide valuable insight into root cause analysis and long-term performance considerations. Alongside this, we highlight the critical role of shot peening—widely recognised as one of the most effective processes for enhancing fatigue life and improving resistance to failure in spring components.
In Shot Peening – Part 2: Key Design Considerations, we build on the processing fundamentals introduced in Part 1, examining the additional factors required to achieve optimal fatigue performance. While parameters such as shot size, media type, and Almen intensity form the foundation of the process, the final specification must also take into account the specific spring geometry, material properties, residual stress requirements, and in-service operating conditions. Understanding and balancing these variables is essential to ensuring consistent, durable performance in real-world applications.
Successful IST Free Webinar Series
We are delighted to report that both of the recent IST free webinars have been exceptionally well received, attracting strong attendance and positive feedback from participants.
The first session, “Design and Optimisation of Compression Springs Using Spring Calculator Professional (SCP)”, was expertly delivered by Dr Richard Dignall. This webinar provided valuable insights into efficient spring design, with a practical focus on using SCP to improve performance, accuracy, and optimisation in real-world applications. Attendees particularly appreciated the clear demonstrations and the opportunity to deepen their understanding of advanced spring design techniques.
The second webinar, presented by Dr Conor McCaughey, focused on “Failure”. Shot Peening – Part 2: Key Design Considerations
In Part 1, we covered the core principles behind shot peening. Here, we take that foundation a step further—because achieving optimum fatigue performance isn’t just about setting standard parameters. It requires a more considered approach, taking into account how the spring is designed, the material it’s made from, and the conditions it will ultimately face in service.
While factors such as shot size, media type, and Almen intensity remain central to the process, the most effective specifications are always those tailored to the real-world application.
Duplex Peening
For more demanding applications, we often look beyond single-stage peening. Duplex peening is one such approach that can deliver measurable performance gains.
This involves two carefully controlled stages. The first uses a larger shot size to introduce deeper compressive stresses beneath the surface, creating the familiar dimpled profile. The second stage then uses finer media to refine the surface, smoothing those indentations and redistributing the compressive stresses closer to the surface where crack initiation typically begins.
In a standard single-stage process, peak compressive stress is usually found around 50 microns below the surface. With duplex peening, this can be brought closer—often to around 20 microns—offering improved resistance to crack initiation and early-stage fatigue failure. Between stages, we commonly apply a low-temperature heat treatment (typically 200–250°C) to stabilise the stress profile before refining it further.
Distortion
One of the realities of shot peening is that introducing compressive stress beneath the surface can lead to slight distortion. In most cases this is minimal, but where tight tolerances are critical, it’s something we need to factor in early.
There are several practical ways to manage this:
- Using smaller shot sizes
- Reducing Almen intensity
- Applying a light stress relief (around 225°C for 30 minutes)
- Introducing cold pre-stressing after peening
- Running sample trials to understand distortion and design accordingly
In many cases, a small adjustment at the design stage can avoid unnecessary rework later.
Spring Design Considerations
Shot peening is fundamentally a line-of-sight process, which means geometry matters more than you might expect.
Features like tight coil spacing, shadowed areas, or complex profiles can limit how effectively the media reaches the surface. When that happens, coverage—and therefore performance—can become inconsistent.
To address this, we may need to adapt the process or even the design itself:
- Selecting smaller shot sizes to improve access
- Extending processing time
- Reducing batch sizes to improve exposure
- Using pulse peening techniques
- Introducing fixtures to improve part movement
- Adjusting design features such as coil spacing
Early collaboration between design and processing can make a significant difference here.
Material Selection
Material choice has a direct impact on how shot peening should be applied.
For example:
- Stainless steels and non-ferrous alloys often benefit from non-metallic media, such as glass or ceramic, to prevent contamination
- Post-peening treatments like pickling or passivation may be required to restore corrosion resistance if steel shot has to be used
In reality, material details aren’t always fully defined at the processing stage, which is why close communication between customer and manufacturer is so important when finalising specifications.
In-Service Relaxation
It’s also worth considering what happens after the spring leaves production.
The compressive stresses introduced during peening can gradually relax over time—particularly in elevated temperature environments—which may lead to a loss of load.
To reduce this risk, we typically consider:
- Lowering shot intensity or shot size
- Applying stress relief after peening
- Pre-setting the spring (cold or hot methods)
- Choosing materials with better resistance to relaxation
These small decisions can significantly improve long-term performance.
Corrosion Considerations
Shot peening can also influence corrosion behaviour. By removing the oxide layer formed during heat treatment, the process can expose fresh material—particularly in carbon steels—making it more susceptible to corrosion if left untreated.
Where this is a concern, we would usually recommend:
- Post-peening stress relief
- Temporary corrosion protection
- Application of coatings (passive or sacrificial)
- Selecting inherently corrosion-resistant materials
Again, it’s about looking at the full lifecycle of the component, not just the immediate performance gain.
Relevant Standards
When developing or validating a shot peening process, several established standards can provide useful guidance:
- DEF STAN 03-21/2 (1995) – Mechanical Methods for Inducing Compressive Surface Residual Stress
- MIL-S-13165C (1991) – Shot Peening of Metal Parts
- SAE HS-84 (1992) – SAE Manual on Shot Peening
These serve as a strong reference point, particularly for critical or regulated applications.
While standard shot peening parameters give us a solid starting point, the best results always come from a more holistic view. By considering geometry, material behaviour, and real service conditions together, we can ensure the process delivers maximum fatigue performance—without compromising dimensional accuracy or long-term reliability.

IST recently returned from a highly successful week at Wire Düsseldorf 2026, one of the world’s leading trade fairs for the wire and cable industry. The event proved to be an outstanding platform for connecting with both new customers and long-standing partners, reinforcing IST’s position at the forefront of the spring industry.
Throughout the exhibition, the IST stand welcomed a steady stream of visitors from across the globe. It was particularly rewarding to engage face-to-face with valued members of our community while also forging new relationships with prospective customers eager to learn more about our solutions. These conversations highlighted the continued demand for technical, reliable support within the industry.
A key highlight of the week was the opportunity to showcase the latest developments in our world-leading spring design software, SCP. Live demonstrations attracted significant interest, with attendees keen to explore the enhanced capabilities and performance improvements that continue to set SCP apart as an essential tool for modern spring engineers. The Institute of Spring Technology Makes Its Debut at Rail Live
The Institute of Spring Technology (IST) recently marked an exciting milestone by exhibiting at Rail Live for the very first time. As the UK’s largest rail industry event, Rail Live provided the perfect platform for IST to showcase its specialist expertise to a highly targeted audience of rail professionals, infrastructure specialists, manufacturers, and suppliers from across the sector.
This appearance was particularly significant as it represented the first time that IST had exhibited at an industry-specific event. Known internationally for its expertise in spring technology, testing, research, and consultancy, IST welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with rail industry stakeholders and demonstrate how its services can support the reliability, safety, and performance of critical spring components used throughout the rail sector.
Held in the beautiful surroundings of the Cotswolds, Rail Live offers a unique exhibition experience, with demonstrations, networking, and displays taking place in a live outdoor railway environment. Fortunately, the weather played its part throughout the event, helping to create a positive atmosphere and encouraging strong visitor engagement across the exhibition site.
For IST, the event proved to be a valuable opportunity to reconnect with existing customers while also establishing a wide range of new industry contacts. Visitors to the stand were able to learn more about IST’s comprehensive spring testing capabilities, which help manufacturers and operators verify the performance and durability of spring components used in demanding applications.
There was also considerable interest in IST’s spring failure analysis services. With reliability and safety remaining key priorities across the rail industry, understanding why components fail and identifying preventative measures is essential. IST’s expertise in investigating spring failures enables organisations to understand issues, improve designs, and minimise the risk of future problems, ultimately supporting safer and more efficient rail operations.
The positive response received throughout the exhibition highlighted the growing recognition of the importance of specialist spring engineering expertise within the rail sector. Metallurgical Analysis - Part 4: Using SEM & EDX to Uncover Spring Failures
Metallurgical Analysis – Part 4: Using SEM & EDX to Uncover Spring Failures
SEM
The next stage of a failure analysis is to image the fracture faces using our scanning electron microscope, or SEM for short. We mount the sectioned fracture faces on a stand using putty. This is to ensure we achieve the best imaging angle for the fracture faces and they don’t fall while being examined. The samples are also painted in a conductive, carbon based compound as good electrical conductivity is required.
An SEM examines fracture faces by scanning them with a focused beam of electrons. Using electrons rather than light gives a significantly higher resolution image and gives a better depth of view. This is invaluable when looking for small details on uneven surfaces.
When the electrons hit the sample it will emit its own electrons from the surface, known as secondary electrons. The number of electrons emitted depends on the surface shape (rough, smooth, cracks), presented as varying contrasts, revealing features such as crack paths, pitting and brittle vs ductile structures amongst others.
As the beam scans across, a detailed, high-magnification image is formed. We then save these images and use them within the reports. The stage that the fracture faces are sitting on can rotate; allowing us to view the wire surface near the fracture face, gaining more evidence.


EDX
Next, we can perform an energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy also known as EDX analysis. In our line of work, elements found during this process can give us some big clues into how the spring has failed. We could find unwanted corrosive elements, elements which don’t match the material certificates or elements used for surface plating within cracks. All of which would help direct us to a root cause.
The EDX uses the electron beam within an SEM. As the electrons hit the sample, atoms in the sample emit x-rays. Each one of the elements at the surface emits an X-ray with a unique energy signature. This is picked up by a detector and presented on a graph as a spectrum of energies. This is compared with standard spectra for each element, allowing the makeup of the region under investigation to be known.
This is particularly useful for suspected corrosion. Corrosion is one of the most common forms of failure accelerant, and if corrosion has occurred EDX will display elements associated with corrosion, e.g. sodium, chlorine and elevated levels of oxygen. These labelled graphs can then be used in the report to highlight regions of, for example, corrosion.

Colleagues and guests from the Institute of Spring Technology gathered at the picturesque Whittlebury Hall course recently for a memorable day of competition, camaraderie and excellent golf.
Players were welcomed by very pleasant weather conditions, with sunshine and comfortable temperatures providing an ideal backdrop for the event. However, a strong breeze sweeping across the course ensured that the day was far from straightforward. The gusting winds tested club selection, accuracy and course management throughout the round, adding an extra challenge for golfers of all abilities.
The event format gave participants plenty of opportunity to enjoy the renowned Whittlebury Hall layout. Teams competed over 18 holes during the morning session before returning to the fairways for an additional nine holes in the afternoon. The extended format allowed everyone to make the most of the occasion, while also providing ample opportunity for some healthy rivalry between colleagues.
Despite the tricky conditions, there were several standout performances worthy of recognition.
Congratulations go to James Whitehead from Springmasters, who demonstrated both power and precision to claim the prizes for Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin.
Alex Banks from G&O Springs delivered the most consistent performance of the day, securing the award for Best Individual Score after an impressive display across the course.
The coveted Best Team Performance title was awarded to G&O Springs, whose collective efforts proved enough to see them finish ahead of the competition.

The Institute of Spring Technology’s golf day once again proved to be a fantastic opportunity to strengthen relationships, encourage teamwork and enjoy some friendly competition away from the workplace. With challenging conditions, excellent company and deserving winners, the event was another successful addition to the Institute’s calendar.

Betts Spring Manufacturing engineering and manufacturing teams worked with the team at University of California Irvine to supply the springs for their vehicle. They met with the students regularly to guide their design decisions and help with troubleshooting during their testing events leading up to the SAE Baja competition this year. The UCI team had their best performance in many years.
